Response to Consumers Report Regarding High Levels of Lead in Protein Supplements

- Posted in Health Tips

It appears that an Article in Consumer Reports was published recently stating that “Protein Powders Contain High Levels of Lead”

Your health and wellness is our top priority and so we reached out to our vendors, virtually all of whom are Canadian, to get more information and the facts.

Below is a response from an advisor from one of our Canadian supplement companies, Natural Factors that we reached out to for comment…

“Natural Factors is a Canadian company. We abide by Health Canada standards for heavy metal testing. Health Canada specifies maximum limits for each of the 4 heavy metals individually  (arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury). This stringent requirement that each specific heavy metal  has a maximum provides a higher level of protection for our consumers. In contrast, the US FDA has no established limits.

We even go beyond strict Canadian guidelines with ISURA testing for up to 800 possible contaminants, including PCB’s, pesticides, non-GMO status, allergens and more.  In all cases, at a minimum our products meet government testing standards, but in most of our products test below Health Canada limits.”  Dr. Kate Rheaume, ND (inactive)

It was very reassuring to hear that Health Canada has strict standards for testing. This rang true for other Canadian protein suppliers that we contacted. We also carry New Zealand Whey which has even stricter guidelines.

It appears after going through the Consumers Reports article that they were reporting on American products…all the more reason to buy Canadian and support your local Canadian retailers. 😊

**ISURA is Canada’s only independent not-for-profit natural health supplement and food product verification and certification organization. ISURA certification means more accountability in the natural health industry, better products, and informed choices for Canadian consumers.
